Naga at Karon Beach
Ref No. 47 | Updated: December 22, 2012
The golden Karon Beach Naga is set on the beachfront around the centre of Karon Beach, not far from the Baan Karonburi Resort. The naga is a popular symbol in Thai mythology, and in Phuket in particular, where the naga is sometimes equated with the Chinese dragon. Local local Chinese folklore states that the island of Phuket is actually a dragon emerging from the Andaman Sea.
Some people come to pray and give offerings and there you can usually see votive offerings around the base of the statue. Just a few kilometers along Patak Road heading inland, tourists can visit the attractive Wat Suwan Khiriket to admire the elaborate architecture of the Buddhist monastery, as well as statues of Nagas or ‘Nak’ and Giants or ‘Yak’.
