Similan Islands
Ref No. 367 | Updated: January 15, 2013
The Similan Islands cover an area of around 120 square kilometers and feature over nine islands, some of which have stunning sandy beaches with crystal clear water. The islands were declared a National Marine Park in 1982, and are considered one of the top scuba diving destinations in Asia. Divers love coming here due to the clear and warm water, coral reefs and many types of marine life.
There are many ways to reach this National Park, one of the main boat access points is via the pier at Thap Lamu near Khao Lak which is in the province of Phang Nga. A normal boat takes about 3 hours while a speedboat trip takes just over 1 hour to the Similans. Liveaboard dive boats trips also leave from Krabi and Phuket. This National Park is closed to boats during the rainy season months of May to October.
