The Big Buddha Phuket

4.5 out of 5 based on 4 reviews.
Chalong, South Phuket

The Big Buddha Phuket or Ming Mongkol Buddha is an easy, impressive to spot landmark as the Big Buddha is a massive 45 metres or for those that like using imperial measurements, nearly 148 feet high. It is sited hundreds of metres up on the Nark-Kerd Hills, allowing for amazing views of beaches, coves and Phuket City. It is covered in while shinning marble, and is dedicated to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej in honor of his 80th birthday.

There is also on site a 12 metre or 39 feet tall, 22 ton, built out of brass Buddha dedicated to Her Majesty Queen Sirkit. Around the site there are food and drinks stalls and a small exhibition hall explaining how the statue was built and other historic facts. Entry is free, but donations are welcome to aid the work of the monks. The Big Buddha is off Chao Fa Road East, in the district of Chalong. It is well sign posted, it is a 6 km steep hill drive up fairly narrow Soi Yodsane. Dress modestly, although for those wearing shorts, short skirts, singles etc there is a stall where visitors can borrow a sarong.

  1. Phuket’s Big Buddha is a work in progress and you can buy a piece of marble to add to the monument as is is being built. There are superb views in all directions and if you are lucky you can be blessed by a monk. There is a convenient car park at the top with a clothing attendant to lend you something dignified if you are dressed improperly.

  2. This is the one attraction which amazing place in Phuket. You can see the big Buddha when you drive around Chalong area. When you get there you can see the beautiful beach, city view from the top hill. It so impressive. Love there.

  3. There is a short walk up to the top but well worth as the views are specular we could see for miles. Free to get in there should be more things like this in Phuket, and less bars and nightclubs. They are building a temple on site so messy in places. souvenir stalls where selling drinks which was a blessing as it was hot and we were thirsty. Need to get here by car or taxi as it is up a long steep hill. not possible to walk unless you are very super fit.

  4. One of most visited attractions in Phuket. I always bring my friends from other provinces visit here. On Nakkerd hilltop, over looking Chalong bay and Kata area, both sunset and sun rise views very very beautiful.
