Live Music in Phuket
Most live music venues on the island are to be found in Patong and Phuket Town, although the latter is more catered towards locals.
There are a large number of bars in Phuket that provide live music with the number often doubling during the high season with the increase in the number of visitors. Sometimes these will be local Thai bands that play a mixture of western and Thai and on other locations they will be Filipino bands who normally play only western music.
There are a few bars around the island that offer the opportunity to Jam so if you are an accomplished musician ask if you can play a couple of songs with the band.
Rock & Pop
Opposite the entrance to Bangla Road along Rat-U-Thit Road is Rock City, which has nightly performances of rock party hits from hard rock anthems to ballads. Just next door to Rock City is Tai Pan, which can get quite busy late in the evening. Located on the opposite corner is Margarita Bar, an ideal spot for watching the comings and goings at the entrance of Bangla and listening to some reasonable covers. Further south along Rat-U-Thit Road across from OTOP Market is the Hard Rock Cafe complete with rock memorabilia adorning the walls and a decent house band.
In Phuket Town the busiest venues is Timber Hut. The house bands play a mix of international rock and pop hits as well as popular Thai music, with a DJ between sets playing hip-hop mixes. Blue Marina in the basement of the Merlin Hotel also gets quite busy and is often open a little later. Other venues you worth checking out are Jammin Music Club and Sofa Pub.
Jazz & Folk
If you like jazz head over to Baan Rim Pa, a famous Thai restaurant overlooking Patong Bay at its northern end between Patong and Kalim. You can sit right at the bar and enjoy a drink while watching the ocean waves rolling against the cliffs just below the restaurant. Other jazz venues include Ratri Jazztaurant in Kata and Glasnost, a tiny bar which also doubles as a law office along Soi Rommani in Phuket Town.
For Irish folk mixed with rock and blues try one of Patong’s Irish pubs, Molly Malone’s and Scruffy Murphy’s. Scruffy’s is located on Bangla, while Molly’s is next to McDonald’s on the beach road.
