Introduction to City Centre

Ayutthaya, or Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya as it is officially called, was the capital of the Siamese Kingdom for 417 years from 1350 to 1767. Located approximately 76 km north of Bangkok and easily accessible via a 1.30 hour car journey, it is popular for day trips out of the capital as well as for longer overnight stays. In the city center area there are plenty of hotels to choose from ranging from budget friendly guesthouses to middle-range tourist class hotels. The majority of hotels can be found on Naresuan Road. The major attraction in Ayutthaya is the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that covers 1,810 Rai of land on an island at the confluence of the Chao Phraya and Pasak rivers. Travellers can explore the ancient ruins dotted around the area on foot or bicycle, or even on elephant back. Another way to explore this historical city is by barge or longtail boat that gives a different view of the temples and authentic local life from the rivers and canals.
