Introduction to Bangkok

Bangkok is a feast for the senses with its fantastic sights and sounds, non-stop hustle and bustle, and hedonistic nightlife. As well as being the nation’s capital city, Bangkok is also the cultural, economic and political centre of the country. Founded in 1782 by King Rama I across the Chao Phraya River from the previous capital Thonburi, the city is full of historic and gilded temples, and is known in Thai as Krung Thep, or the City of Angels. No visit to Bangkok is complete without a visit to the Grand Palace. For 150 years this was not only the seat of the monarchy but also contained the entire government. In fact many important royal ceremonies are still held throughout the year. Aside from its cultural attractions Bangkok is also a favourite destination among shopaholics, with its gleaming shopping malls and excellent markets. Chatuchak Weekend Market, in particular, should be on every bargain hunters “to do list”. The city is served by two airports: Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang International Airport. Public transportation is plentiful and cheap. The BTS Skytrain and MRT Underground rail transit systems provide quick and convenient access to most parts of the city, while a metered taxis, tuk-tuk or motorcycle taxi is easily to flag down day or night.
