Introduction to Khaosan Road

Traditionally a backpacker area, Khaosan Road is one of the most famous tourist areas of Bangkok. Situated in the historic quarter of Rattanakosin Island near the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, this lively 500 metre-long road is full of budget guesthouses, tour offices, eateries, bars, coffee shops and a plenty of shops and stalls. In the evening the area is popular with both tourists and trendy locals who come to enjoy the areas bars and clubs. Khaosan Road is also one of the main places in the city for celebrating the Songkran Festival between 12th-14th April, which descends into a huge waterfight. Transport links are not as convenient as other parts of the city with no BTS Skytrain or MRT Subway stations. However, there is the Chao Phraya Express service from the nearby Tha Prachan Pier, which is a lovely way to see the city from the river and definitely beats sitting in traffic. To get around locally try hiring a tuk-tuk to browse nearby points of interest like the Grand Palace, the Giant Swing and some of the museums in the area.
