Introduction to Buriram

One of the Thailand’s largest provinces by area, Buriram is located in the southeast corner of Thailand on the Cambodian border. The area was once under the control of the Khmer empire and there are plenty of Khmer temples and ruins dotted around the countryside. The highlight of these is the Phanom Rung historical park which contains one of the best preserved Angkorian monuments in Southeast Asia. Restored by the Department of Fine Arts of Thailand over a period of 17 years the site is definitely worth a visit for any one with an interest in Khmer history and architecture. Sitting on the summit of an extinct volcano, the site was constructed during the 10th to 13th century AD at the height of the Khmer empire. Buriram is also home to hundreds of other Khmer and Dvaravati monuments which can easily be explored from the provincial capital or the small town of Nang Rong, where accommodation can be found either in hotels or guesthouses. The province is best visited during one of its many colourful festivals including Songkran, the Thai New Year, or the Phanom Rung Fair, which is held on the full moon of the fifth lunar month.
