Introduction to Doi Suthep

Doi Suthep is a granite mountain located about 15 minutes by car the west of Chiang Mai town. There are simple to mid-range hotels in the area to suit most tastes and budgets. The Doi Suthep-Pui National Park is a major attraction in this area that should not be missed. Visitors can get red Songthaews in front of Chiang Mai University to take you up to the highlights of the park. 15 km up the hill is Wat Prathat Doi Suthep. The main temple complex is accessible by a lift or by climbing up a 300-step Naga Staircase. This is an important place of worship for Thai Buddhists but is also an amazing viewpoint from where you can get a fantastic view over the city and surrounding area. 8 km further up the road is Phuping Palace, the royal winter residence, which is surrounded by lavish flower gardens. Guests can continue their trip to Doi Pui Peak where there is a Hmong tribal village and visitors can enjoy various activities such as biking, trekking, bird and butterfly watching.
