Introduction to Haiya

Lying to the south of the old city, Haiya is a subdistrict in Amphur Muang that covers Wualai Road, the Saturday Night Street Market, that should be part of the itinerary for any Chiang Mai visit. During the day this kilometer-long road is filled with numerous shops selling delicate silverware handicrafts. On Saturdays, it is transformed into a crowded street market that is open from 5 pm to 10 pm. Along the street visitors can browse a huge range of local products at fantastic prices and sample delicious local food. To experience traditional Lanna craftsmanship, visitors should visit Wat Srisuphan, the only temple in Thailand which has a chapel made from real tin and silver. Travellers who want to stay overnight will find a choices of various guesthouses in the area. Located at Pratu Haiya, the southern gate of the old city, is the pet and plant market and at night, this area becomes a lively night spot with various bars and clubs.
