Introduction to Mae Sai

Set at the topmost edge of Thailand along the border with Myanmar, Mae Sai district lies roughly 62 km from the city centre of Chiang Rai. Most hotels in this area are quite reasonably priced. The top attraction here is the Mae Sai-Takelek Border Market where you can buy all kinds of jewelry such as jade, ruby and other gemstones. The market is great for just strolling around, but be careful if you decide to buy some whiskey or cigarettes, as most are fake. And while you can find many Chinese-made electronic goods on the cheap, most are pretty poor quality. Other activities include crossing the bridge over to Tachilek in Myanmar where you can visit the replica of the Shwedagon Pagoda as well as the gems market. Adventurous travellers should check out Doi Jong, which is a limestone hill where you can climb up to see the stunning stalagmites and stalactites in Pum Cave.
