Introduction to Chumphon

Located on the Isthmus of Kra, Chumphon is a long thin province with the Gulf of Thailand on the east and hills to the west along the border with Myanmar. Although blessed with lovely beaches and islands Chumphon has only recently appeared on the maps as a tourist destination. The town of Chumphon is a peaceful and charming provincial capital that is generally only visited as a transit or overnight stop for travellers going to Koh Tao, or to switch buses to Phuket. However, there are some great beaches with very reasonably priced hotel and bungalow accommodation such as Haad Sai Ri, Haad Pardorn and Thung Wau Laen that are within a short drive of town. The nearby islands including Koh Samet, Koh Mattra and Koh Ngam Ngoi offer good diving and snorkelling opportunities and trips can be arranged in the main tourist areas such as in town and at Haad Sai Ri beach.
