Introduction to Hat Yai
Hat Yai is the largest city in the south of Thailand and the third largest in the kingdom. Although located in Songkhla province, the city is not the provincial capital, that honour belonging to the smaller city of Songkhla, which is nearby and forms part of the Hat Yai-Songkhla Metropolitan Area. Hat Yai is served by Hat Yai International Airport with daily flights from Bangkok and other domestic destinations as well as international flights from Singapore and Malaysia. There are plenty of hotels in the city and Hat Yai has quite a cosmopolitan feel. Its shopping centres and markets are excellent including Kim Yong and Suntisook, which are basically large mazes of little alleyways lined with small shops selling all manner of goods including electronic gadgets, watches, clothing and cosmetics, mostly of questionable provenance. Nevertheless, Hat Yai is a fun and bustling city with a vibrant nightlife scene that caters to both locals and tourists. Transportation is very straightforward and the compact city centre is easy to walk around.
