Introduction to Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi is located approximately 2 hours drive northwest of Bangkok at the confluence of the Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai rivers, bordering Myanmar to the west. The province is one of Thailand’s largest offering a combination of stunning natural scenery and important historical sites. Kanchanaburi is best known as the location of the "Bridge Over the River Kwai", built by Allied prisoners of war and Asian workers during the Second World War as part of the Death Railway. There are a number of museums in the area containing information about this period including the Hellfire Pass Museum, the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre and the JEATH War Museum. A visit to one of the war cemeteries can also be an educational if somewhat sombre experience. Most of the hotel accommodation is found along the river and there are some lovely resorts surrounded by jungle. For nature lovers there are some excellent national parks which contain beautiful waterfalls, caves and lush jungle. The most popular of these are Erawan National Park and Sai Yok National Park, where you can find the world’s smallest species of bat.
