Introduction to Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is a group of over 50 islands located just off the mainland to the south of Krabi Province nestled in the Andaman Sea. The best beaches and the majority of hotels and resorts are located on a Koh Lanta Yai, the largest of the Lanta Islands, and it is this island that most people are mean when referring to Koh Lanta. Much like the rest of Krabi, the island has a laid back idyllic atmosphere and only moderate development with most accommodation in the form of beach bungalows and a few luxury hotels. The best beaches on Koh Lanta Yai are located on its west coast including Klong Dao, Klong Nin and Ba Kan Tieng beaches. There is excellent snorkelling off many of the beaches and some amazing dive sites such as Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, which are just a short boat ride away. Other popular activities include sea kayaking, elephant trekking and eco-tours of the mangrove forests. Koh Lanta Yai can be reached by a taking two short car ferry journeys, first to Koh Lanta Noi, and then onto Koh Lanta Yai. The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to April.
