Introduction to Koh Samet

Koh Samet is a small mountainous island in Rayong province boasting white sandy beaches and clear waters. Although not as pristine as its location in the Khao Laem Ya–Ko Samet National Park might suggest, development has remained relatively low-key and the island has managed to retain much of its natural charm despite being the closest holiday island to Bangkok. Most of the best beaches are found on the east coast including Haad Sai Kaew, the most popular beach on the island with the majority of hotels and bungalows, as well as Ao Tubtim and Ao Hin Khlok. On the west coast are a couple of nice beaches where you can find more upmarket hotels and resorts. Koh Samet is easily reached by ferry from the piers at Ban Phe, which have daily services throughout the year. As the island is quite small its easy to get around and there is really only one road that is plied by "songthaews"; pickup trucks with two rows of benches. The main activities on the island are scuba diving and snorkelling, as well as fishing and trips to other nearby islands.
