Introduction to Koh Tao

Famous for its diving and amazing beaches, Koh Tao lies in the Gulf of Thailand roughly 1 hour by ferry from Koh Pha Ngan or 3 hours from Surat Thani. The ferry pier is located on the west coast of the island at Mae Haad Beach, which is the main town on the island and where you can find the largest concentration of hotels and bungalow resorts as well as restaurants, bars and shops. Just to the north is Sairee Beach, a popular beach with plenty of bungalow accommodation, beach bars and restaurants. Other beaches include Chalok Baan Khao and Haad Thien beaches, which are less crowded and still retain an idyllic charm. The main activity on the island is scuba diving and thousands flock here to dive the clear waters every year. Diving and dive training on Koh Tao is inexpensive and generally cheaper than other places in Thailand. Also, the possibility of sighting a whale shark, which frequent the waters around Koh Tao, is a big draw. Other popular activities include game fishing, sailing, and increasingly rock climbing and bouldering.
