Introduction to Korat

Also known as Nakhon Ratchasima, Korat is one of the kingdom’s largest and most populous provinces. Situated approximately 260 kilometers northeast of Bangkok, Korat is the gateway to the Isaan and historically marked the boundary between Lao and Siamese territories. The city of Korat serves as the northeast’s main transportation hub, as well as its economic centre. Until the 14th century Korat and the provinces to the east were under the control of the Khmer Empire and Khmer ruins such as Prasat Phimai are popular historic attractions. Another major attraction is Khao Yai National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the country’s second largest national park. This sprawling nature reserve is comprised of verdant hills and grasslands which containing a wide variety of plant and animal species. There is no accommodation in the park itself but plenty of hotels and resorts can be found in the nearby area. Activities within the park include hiking, kayaking, bicycling and night safaris.
