Introduction to Lampang

Lampang province in northern Thailand resides within the wide river valley of the Wang River where mountains frame the landscape with the highest peak at 1,697 meters. It's neighbored by surrounding provinces Phayao, Chiang Rai, Phrae, Sukhothai and Chiang Mai. The provincial capital, Nakhon Lampang, is a burgeoning modern city with many of it's traditional structures intact including some interesting Burmese-influenced architecture. One of the most important temples in Lamapang is the Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao, the original residence of the Emerald Buddha, which is now housed in Bangkok’s Grand Palace. The temple now houses a replica. Another popular attraction is the Thailand Elephant Conservation Center, located north of the town on the way to Chiang Mai. The center cares for elephants including six of HM King Bhumibol's white elephants in the Royal Elephant Stables, but also provides opportunities for elephant rides and has elephant shows.
