Introduction to Mae Hong Son

Mae Hong Son is located in the far northwest of Thailand bordering Myanmar. Set in a deep valley surrounded by the Shan Hills, Mae Hong Son is the kingdom's most mountainous province and its peaks are covered in mist for most of the year. Due to its rugged terrain and remote location the area has remained isolated for most of its history and its population is thinly spread, being the least densely populated province in Thailand. The local population is mostly made up of hill tribes such as the Hmong, Lisu and Karen. The province boasts many national parks that are comprised of lush pristine rainforests, beautiful waterfalls and rivers. Popular activities include jungle trekking, camping and rafting. The provincial capital is also called Mai Hong Son, and along with the small town of Pai, has become a popular destination among eco and adventure tourists with many small hotels, resorts and guesthouses. The best time of year to visit is between November and February during the cool season when the weather is drier and temperatures can reach 0 degress Celsius at night.
