Introduction to Mukdahan

Located in the Mekong River valley in the northeast of Thailand, Mukdahan was traditionally the main entry point into Laos and even today most travellers simply pass through while maybe spending a night at one of the town's many hotels and guest houses. However, this sleepy border province contains many sights and attractions that warrant a few days exploring. These include the Indochina Market, which is known as the shopping hub for the Mekong River area. There are also many parks in the province. These include Phu Pha Thoep National Park, Phu Sa Dok Bua National Park, and the Princess Mother Park. Mukdahan is also the home of various festivals throughout the year. The Bun Duean Hok Festival held in May, is a rocket festival that is believed to bring the rains after the long dry season. In November boat races are held on the Mekong River to celebrate the end of Buddhist Lent.
