Introduction to Phetchaburi

Although still considered part of central Thailand, Phetchaburi province is located at the top of the Malay Peninsula along the Gulf of Thailand and bordering Myanmar to the west. The terrain is made up of flat plains along the coastline which rise up the mountains that form the border with Myanmar. The province is ideal for nature lovers and is home to Kaeng Krachan National Park, the kingdom's largest at over 3,000 square kilometers, which covers nearly half the total area of the province. Although comprising mostly unexplored mountainous areas, the park also contains a large reservoir and has plenty of eco-adventure activities including trekking and whitewater rafting. The town of Phetchaburi has a rich history dating back to the eighth century including a number of interesting temples. There are plenty of inexpensive hotels and guest houses to choose from in the city which is a good base for exploring the province's natural wonders. Cha Am Beach is a popular seaside town with plenty of resort accommodation but can get very busy on weekends and public holidays as Bangkokians flock to the beach so be sure to book your hotel well in advance.
