Introduction to Phrae
Located in northern Thailand in the Yom river valley, Phrae is known for its old city that was founded over 800 years ago and still retains its fortified walls which are surrounded by a moat. The city remains quite untouched by time and features many examples of traditional Thai architecture, particularly houses made entirely from teak wood. This sleepy city remains one of the best kept architectural secrets in all of Thailand with many beautiful temples, old buildings and 19th century teak mansions. Historical attractions in Phrae include Wat Luang which contains several ancient Buddha statues. Included amongst them are several 500+ year old relics which continue to be used for worship to this day. The city Pillar Shrine of Phrae is another feature within the province. It stands as a large inscription stone detailing the construction of the town temple and the history of the region. The original scripts are kept on display and can be picked off and read from the city pillar directly.
