Introduction to Saraburi
Saraburi Province is located within Thailand’s central region northeast of Bangkok. Its east side is composed of large high plains and plateaus while in the west it remains mostly flat and low. There are two national parks located in the area that contain several rivers and waterfalls. Both are protected wildlife areas and are home to many endangered species of plants and animals which are unique to this part of the world. One of the main attractions within Saraburi is the Wat Phra Phutthabat which was built in the 17th century and remains to be one of the most holy temples in all of Thailand. This temple is built around a footprint of the Buddha and is a popular site for pilgrimage. The footprint was declared the footprint of Buddha when a 17th century hunter found what he thought to have been a very large footprint imprinted deep into the earth, from there it was since known as the footprint of Buddha and the temple was erected around it. Saraburi also is home to a crocodile farm and zoo. This is one of the main tourist attractions for the area, featuring many species of monkeys, deer and wild birds. Crocodiles are the main attraction as they are born, raised and bred all on site.
