Introduction to Satun
Lying between two mountain ranges along southern Thailand's Andaman Sea coast, Satun is a hilly province with some gorgeous islands. Although part of the kingdom's predominantly Muslim deep-south it is peaceful and friendly and there is none of the separatist violence that has troubled some of its neighbouring provinces to the east. The provincial capital is a small sleepy town with not much to do except enjoy the laid-back atmosphere. The Satun National Museum is really the only attraction worth visiting with its miniature models detailing traditional folk customs and way of life. For most travellers the main reason to visit Satun are its stunning coral-fringed islands, of which there are over 80. Koh Tarutao, Koh Rawi, Koh Lipe and Koh Adang are the largest islands with the majority of bungalow resorts and hotels, and from these it is possible to explore the smaller islands by hiring a longtail boat. If you are looking for an idyllic island holiday away from the crowds then Satun should be top of your list.
