Introduction to Songkhla

Songkhla is one of the southernmost provinces of Thailand and is known for its tasty seafood and lovely beaches, including Laem Simila where you can find a mermaid statue. The area is rich in history and has been a centre of maritime trade for over a millennium. There are a number of museums including the beautiful Songkhla National Museum, which was built in 1878 and was previously used as the governor’s residence. The main city within Songkhla province is Hat Yai, which is also the main transit hub for nearby areas within Thailand. Here you will find plenty of hotels as well as great nightlife and a number of different markets for excellent shopping and bartering opportunities. Ko Yo is an island that is just off of the cost of Songkhla and is known for having one of the most beautiful coastlines in all of Thailand. On the island you will also find the folklore museam and a number of entertaining stores and shops. Restaurants are also excellent on the Island of Ko Yo and feature even more great seafood from Thailand’s inland sea.
