Introduction to Sukhothai
As the site of the first Siamese capital that was founded in the thirteenth century, Sukhothai is steeped in historical significance and Thai cultural tradition. Located 12 kilometers from the modern town, the Sukhothai Historical Park encompasses the ruins of the palaces, temples, walls and canals of the historic city and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most impressive and must-see ruins at Sukhothai include Wat Mahathat, which contains nearly 200 chedis and some very well preserved Buddha statues, and Wat Sri Sawat, originally a Hundu shrine that was later converted to a Buddhist temple. The sprawling 45 square kilometer site is best explored by bicycle which are easy and cheap to hire and most of the main sights can be seen in a day. If you are not yet "templed out" there are yet more ruins at the Sri Satchanalai Historical Park located some 50 kilometers away which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was painstakingly restored over a period of 12 years starting in the 1970s. Aside from historic attractions, Sukhothai also holds many natural wonders including some beautiful national parks such as Ramkhamhaeng National Park with its pristine forests and rare animals, notably barking deer and Asiatic black bear.
