Introduction to Ubon Ratchathani

Thailand's easternmost province Ubon Ratchathani, or just Ubon for short, is located at the meeting point of the Thai, Laos and Cambodian borders. This has created a local population containing a vibrant mix of ethnic Thai, Laotian, Khmer and Vietnamese, which has contributed in a large part to the gastronomic delights to be found in this part of Isaan. Most travellers visit Ubon on route to southern Laos through the border crossing at Chong Mek, however, those who choose to spend some time exploring the province are richly rewarded. The town of Ubon is a bustling provincial capital with plenty of hotels and places to stay, but countryside also has much to offer with some lovely national parks and waterfalls to enjoy. The province has plenty of important temples including Wat Nong Bua with its unusual white chedi, or Wat Pah Nanacha, a forest temple that is home to a number of monks from around the world including westerners who have come here to practice meditation.
