Introduction to Udon Thani

The province of Udon Thani is located in the northeast of Thailand close to the border with Laos. Its provincial capital is one of the largest cities in Thailand and is one of the main hubs for commerce and industry in the Isaan region. Udon Thani is served by Udon Thani International Airport which has daily flights from Bangkok and weekly flights to Chiang Mai, as well as a few international flights. The city is also on the main railway line from Bangkok to Nong Khai on the Thai border, making it a possible stopping off point for trips to Laos. Though there are not many sights in the city itself, it is a bustling and vibrant town with some good shopping malls and a sprawling night market in the town centre near the train station which starts at 5pm. The most famous attraction in Udon Thani is Ban Chiang, a small town some 50 kilometers east of the city. The Ban Chiang National Museum houses bronze age artifacts including potterys, tools and artifacts discovered at the site, which is thought to belong to one of the earliest civilizations in Southeast Asia that emerged around 2,000 BC.
