Introduction to Uthai Thani

Uthai Thani is a province located in western Thailand. It is primarily covered in forest in the west and has vast plains in the upper regions of the province. The Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most popular natural attractions in the province. It was named a world heritage site in 1991 and contains a number of endangered species from tigers to elephants. The province is named after King Rama I who was born in the area and renamed the province after his old name of Uthai. Thus the name Uthai Thani came about when the province was formed in 1898. One of the other main attractions is the local history and cultural museum. Here visitors can look in on prehistoric remains of humans, ancient clothing and the history of the region and its leaders. A famous temple in the area is the Wat Sankat Rattana Khiri which features an ancient bronze Buddha image and a statue which is dedicated to the father of King Rama I. His influence can be felt throughout this province and there are many images of him and his father to be seen in different places of worship.
