Health Cover

Private health insurance is a necessity for any foreigner living in Thailand. If you are involved in an accident and don't have health insurance or any credit cards on you, as heartless as this may sound, some hospitals may refuse to treat you.

Chances are that if you have health insurance with a well-known insurance company, your insurance will be honoured in Thailand, though it does no harm to check this with them. The cost of healthcare in Thailand is exceedingly cheap compared to Europe or North America. Happily, low cost does not mean low standards and many people take advantage of this fact by travelling to Thailand to get treatment and surgery that would otherwise be very costly in their home country.

There are plenty of local and international insurance companies with a wide range of policies to suit any budget. However, most policies will only cover you within Thailand. Policies which will cover medical expenses abroad are available but are much more expensive.

Car Insurance

There is a compulsory car insurance which every car must have. You will have a sticker which must be displayed in your windshield otherwise you could face a large fine. This is very cheap though it will only cover third parties. First-class and third-class insurance is relatively inexpensive and definitely recommended.

Home Insurance

Property insurance and home contents insurance are available through most insurance companies. Home contents insurance is definitely worth considering as burglars will target foreigners more than Thais, in the belief that foreigers usually have more valuables lying around. Insurance on individual items such as laptop computers is also available.
