Jungle Trekking
To experience a different side of Phuket, try a trek through the island’s interior. Khao Phra Thaew National Park is Phuket’s last remaining virgin rainforest and is home to protected species of wild animals.
The national park has several forest trails for hiking and guides can be hired from the reserve office near Ton Sai waterfall. There are also tour companies that take small groups on excursions through jungle paths, which also include hotel transfers, English-speaking jungle guides, and drinks.
Khao Sok
For serious trekkers and nature lovers, on the peninsula north of Phuket is Khao Sok National Park. The park covers an area of about 650 sq kms (though if combined with neighbouring wildlife sanctuaries the total protected area is 4,400 sq kms). Khao Sok straddles the mountain ridge that separates the east and west coasts of Thailand’s peninsula, and is a virgin tropical forest peppered with striking limestone formations towering up to 1000 metres.
