QBE Insurance Phang Nga Bay Regatta
16 - 20 February 2007
Every year the QBE Phang Nga Bay Regatta is always held over the Chinese New Year in January or February. More famous for its spectacular settings of the courses and parties than serious, ambitious winning it is advertised as the 4 day fun sailing event on which the participants sleep mainly aboard their boats around the nearest beaches of the different bays every night.
Inaugurated by Artasia Press in 1998, this smaller sailing event follows the much bigger King's Cup Regatta two month before and was meant to be a regatta with a maximum of 40 participants. It has enjoyed the sponsorship of the QBE Insurance, the primary maritime insurance company in the region. The original 3-day event was turned into a 4-day formula in 2004 when participants requested that this is one of the most beautiful regatta courses in the world where the fleet unfurls first sail in Phuket to make its circumnavigation of the most scenic Phang Nga Bay.
The 9th regatta from 28th to 31st February 2006 with a record breaking 45 boats competing shows that this small regatta has grown into one of Asia's biggest and there is no limit to be foreseen for future years.
