Regattas & Sailing Events

Phuket Sailing Regattas

Thousands of kilometres of splendid coast-line as well as many wonderful islands and national parks make Thailand some of the best cruising waters in the world. Moreover, most of the marina destinations are still pristine, rather clean and usually free from overcrowded water traffic.

When the Thai government decided to remove the import taxes of 250 percent plus on new boats brought into the kingdom, Phuket experienced a new rising of the regatta scene. Together with a newly developed infrastructure for the marina leisure industry, not only the regatta events increased but at the same time a thriving new sector of upscale tourism opened up.

Because of its excellent cruising and sailing water ways, Thailand is rapidly becoming one of the region's most desirable meeting places for anything related to the marine industry.

One of the earliest regatta events and still the biggest is the Phuket King's Cup Regatta, inaugurated and dedicated to honour HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 60th birthday in December 1987.

Other large racing events include the Andaman Sea Rally in January and the Phang Nga Bay Regatta. The Koh Samui Regatta in May and Phuket Race Week in July are smaller events but are big on fun and excitement.

Ao Chalong Yacht Club organizes Sunday races in between those several day regatta events to keep the sailors on the go and in shape for the big events.
