Many items which you might expect to be cheap in Thailand can actually be fairly expensive due to high import duties on luxury items. This is also true for electronic goods except IT equipment, which is very cheap because the government cut duties on these items to promote growth in IT.
There are still plenty of bargains to be had, however. Clothing, art and handicrafts are excellent buys and Phuket is well stocked with items that will surprise and delight shoppers from all over.
