Review
In 1983, Debbie and Carlos Rosas catalyzed one of the more notable changes to take place in the fitness industry... they took off their shoes and eliminated what was the main staple of aerobic exercise - repetitive jogging up and down. These two acts changed the look and feel of fitness and triggered the emergence of what came to be known as low-impact aerobic exercise, now referred to as soft exercise. Nia, a worldwide fitness movement with 20 years of technical development - founded by Debbie and Carlos - integrates movements, concepts and philosophies from both Eastern and Western traditions.
All you need to do Nia, says certified Nia teacher Rhonda Ann Clarke of the Movement Center, Chalong, 'is a body and 'life energy'. Nia is to exercise what holistic medicine is to health care. Using different components to address different problems, Nia integrates a variety of movement forms. 'These stimulate body sensation, mental creativity, spiritual connection and the movement of energy throughout the body,' says Rhonda. The movement forms include the martial arts (Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do and Aikido), Dance (Jazz, Modern and Duncan Dance) and Body Integration Therapies (Yoga, Feldenkrais and The Alexander Technique).
Nia uses imagery and visuals to stimulate whole body movement. 'The movements are natural, systemic, respecting each person's alignment and fitness level,' says Rhonda, adding that Nia also encourages the expression of emotion to help release the internal pressure of stress. When stress is released, she says, the nervous system is soothed and strengthened.
Vocal sounding is used to stimulate and support 'moving from the core of the body'. 'In a Nia class, students might say the word, 'Yesssss!' while their arms reach for the sky and they sense joy radiating from their bellies, or they might clench their fists and say 'Noooooo!' as their hands open and release downwards,' explains Rhonda.
Nia uses different kinds of music to stimulate the movement of 'physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energy in a way that helps create self-expression'. 'For instance,' says Rhonda, 'I teach many different routines with a variety of music. Each routine has a different focus and intent. For example, Miracle, with music from Olive and Enigma, focuses on rhythm and speed, while Bliss, with music by Shantel, focuses on gravity.'
Rhonda has a university degree in Movement Studies and is a certified personal trainer who has taught in England and in her native Canada. She has also brought her talents to world class spas as the Chiva-Som International Spa in Hua Hin.
