Healthy Living

A community publication by Phuket Internation Hospital

phuket international hospitalThis book is a 'must' for anyone living or contemplating living in Phuket and moves apace through some detailed and invaluable information

'As soon as you step off the airplane, Phuket's climate hits you. Hot and sticky, the sun's rays blast like a furnace; you begin to sweat. Welcome to the tropics. Adjusting to the climate, not to mention Phuket's exotic flora and fauna, will be crucial... Taking a few precautions and being aware of the possible effects of living in a tropical environment will go a long way in maintaining your health.'

So starts the chapter 'Your Health in Phuket' from this comprehensive hardback volume that covers a broad range of topics relevant to a healthy Phuket lifestyle.

Find out how it all started in 'The History of Medicine': 'HRH Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, the father of the present Thai monarch, HRH King Bhumiphol, embarked on an ambitious program to improve the standards of public health in Thailand. [He] planted the seeds for the eventual founding of the Siriraj School of Medicine.'

From the chapter on 'Eating Healthy' you'll discover that street side food stalls may be OK after all: 'Government regulations in Thailand are now stricter than they are in France... street vendors are also checked, and those who pass an initial health check are given a white sign that has the words 'Food Safety'. But watch out for the water, according to one expert.

[He] advises checking that the (drinking) water is certified by the Thai Industrial Standards Institute.

In 'Living Healthy' you'll find a surprising number of things you can get involved in here in Phuket, from dance to tai chi to rugby to jungle jogging, where to make contact to get started, and a rundown of the pitfalls of expat life in the tropics together with some tips on how to deal with the inevitable stress of living in a country with a different way of doing things.

'The message is very simple,' says one contributor, 'BALANCE. Moderate your indulgences', while the author of this chapter advises: 'Keep a sense of humour and accept the things you can't change. Enjoy life but stay healthy' deals with a whole host of topics, focusing on those things which are supposed to be fun but can, if you're not just a bit careful, turn catastrophic. 'Adopt what Thais call a 'cool heart' (jai yen) and just walk away from troublesome situations,' is offered as the way of dealing with certain situations.

The last couple of chapters offer an A-Z of health conditions relevant to life here (for example, discover which creepy-crawlies you need to be wary of, which are life-threatening and which are little more than an irritation) and moves on to a superbly practical guide to first aid. This is the first book of its kind, dealing specifically with health issues as they relate to Phuket. It is, therefore, apt that it's published by the island's first international hospital, demonstrating a continuation of the community-mindedness that led to Siriroj Hospital (now Phuket International Hospital) opening its doors on 31 October 1982. 'Healthy Living in Phuket' will be published in early November 2004. It will be available at Phuket International Hospital and at book shops throughout the island, and is priced at just 450 Baht. Any profits from the sale of the book will be donated to charity.
