During its long history Phuket was settled in multiple waves of migration resulting in the varied ethnic mix of the local people on the island which includes Thai, Malay, Chinese and smaller ethnic groups such as the Moken and Urak Lawoi, who are commonly referred to as “sea gypsies” or chao leh in Thai.
