Hiring Taxis in Phuket
Taxis
Meter taxis are relatively cheap and hassle free. Fares start at 50 baht and go upwards in increments of 7 baht depending on distance and time. There are currently not that many operating in Phuket so it may be difficult to flag one down. However, your hotel should be able to order one for you by phone. Meter taxis from the airport and taxis ordered by phone incur a surcharge. See our section on getting to and from the airport for more information. Very long journeys normally have fixed rates.
You may also come across a few unlicensed taxis, especially in busy tourist areas such as Patong. These are normal looking saloons without any special markings. Like tuk-tuks, you must agree the fare beforehand. You must haggle as the drivers will always quote a price much higher than they will accept. If you are planning on visiting a few places, it can be convenient to hire these taxis for the whole day. Expect to pay upwards of 800 baht for 8 hours. Possibly more depending on the time of year and where you want to go.
As is the case with tuk-tuks, unlicensed taxis are prone to stopping at shops 'along the way', for which they will receive a commission or petrol vouchers. Always insist that they take you to your specified destination.
Motorbike Taxis
Motorbike taxis are available almost anywhere. Fares start at 10 baht, although be prepared to haggle. The official drivers wear red or green vests with a white number on the back. This is not a recommended way of getting around, but they can be handy for short trips when you are in a hurry.
