Coral Island

Coral Island lies just 9 kilometres off the southeastern tip of Phuket and is an ideal destination for a half-day charter. The two main beaches, Long Beach and Banana Beach, can get a little busy during the daytime but there are many quiet bays. Snorkelling is good here especially at the reefs further from the shore.

Not to be confused with the island of the same name in Phang Nga Bay, Koh Hong is part of a small archipelago lying between Koh Yai Noi to the West and the Krabi mainland to the east. The waters around the island are ideal for snorkeling with clear waters and plenty of marine life.

“Hong” means room in Thai and the island gets its name from a ‘room-like’ interior lagoon surrounded by limestone cliffs with only a small channel to the open sea. At high tide you can enter the lagoon on a small boat such as longtails to swim and snorkel in the stunning clear waters. There is also an idyllic sandy beach backed by jungle and surrounded by limestone cliffs on both sides.

Lanta Islands

Koh Lanta is actually a group of 52 islands that form the southernmost district of Krabi province. The two largest islands, Koh Lanta Yai and Koh Lanta Noi (Big Lanta and Little Lanta) are separated by a narrow strait which also includes the small island of Koh Klang. Fifteen of the islands in this group are included in the Koh Lanta National Marine Park.

The two main Lanta islands are quite mountainous and are covered in dense jungle. There is a large variety of wildlife, making it ideal for trekking. The sea surrounding Koh Lanta is dotted with small islands and coral reefs. These provide lots of opportunities for diving or snorkelling.

Phang Nga Bay

Located 47 kilometers northeast of Phuket, the spectacularly scenic Phang Nga Bay is dotted with over 100 islands and is one of the best sailing grounds in the world. The bay is bounded by Phuket island to the west, Phang Nga and Krabi provinces to the north and east.

The bay is famed for its limestone (karst) formations and cliffs that rise vertically up from the warm turquoise waters, the highest of which protrudes 350 m from the seabed. Many of these are fissured with caves which can be reached by sea kayak or dinghy. As well as many islands, the bay contains many inlets and channels waiting to be explored.

Phang Nga Bay also boasts a unique rock formation and the island of Koh Ping Kan, made famous in the James Bond film “The Man with the Golden Gun.” After visiting Koh Ping Kan, just a few minutes north is the Sea Gypsy village of Koh Pan Yi. This village is built almost entirely on stilts, over the water at the base of the towering limestone cliffs of Koh Pan Yi.

Phi Phi Islands

The twin Phi Phi islands, comprised of Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Ley, are located 45 kilometers to the southeast of Phuket. They are famous for their stunning beaches, clear turquoise waters, and towering limestone cliffs rising out of the sea. A popular anchorage is Maya Bay, which was used as a location in the film “The Beach”.

The Phi Phi islands are a popular destination for diving and snorkelling and there is an abundance and marine life here. For visiting yachts the islands offer very good anchorage. Close to the main pier at Ton Sai on the larger Phi Phi Don island you can find a fair selection of shops, bars and restaurants.

Racha Islands

Lying to the south of Phuket, the Racha Islands are a popular anchorage boast stunning white powder sand beaches and clear turquoise-tinged water that is ideal for diving and snorkeling. Closest to Phuket is Racha Yai, which is the larger of the two islands. The main beach is Bungalow Bay which is located on the northwest coast. The sand here is snow white and feels almost like talcum powder. The bay is well protected and has plenty of marine life making it ideal for snorkeling and dive training. A little further to the south is Racha Noi, which doesn’t have any beaches to speak of but has excellent swimming, snorkeling and diving spots.

The main attraction in the Similans is the world-class diving and snorkeling in the crystal clear water which boasts an abundance of marine life. Above the water the beaches are pristine and there are plenty of interesting rock formations.
